Specialized Units
of Research Section

The Research Section at AIIMS, Delhi, is supported by four specialized units, each fostering significant advancements in medical science and technology. The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) centralizes resources & training to enhance clinical research practices. The Centre for Medical Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CMIE) drives innovations in emerging healthcare technologies, including precision medicine and AI-enabled devices. The Centralized Core Research Facility (CCRF) offers cutting-edge instrumentation for genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics, positioning AIIMS among the world’s leading research institutions. Additionally, the Intellectual Property Rights and Technology Transfer Division (IPR & TTD) manages intellectual property and facilitates technology transfer, ensuring academic freedom and equitable revenue sharing. These units collectively bolster AIIMS’s role as a leader in medical research and innovation.
Centralized Core Research Facility (CCRF)

CCRF is a unit with high end instrumentation for various streams of research at AIIMS, New Delhi. CCRF houses core instrumentation facility for genomics, proteomics, BSL-3, microscopy, general facility, flow cytometry, bioinformatics, bioanalytics and other areas. The objective of CCRF is to create a comprehensive and state-of-the-art facility with advanced platform technologies for cutting-edge research in applied genomics, proteomics, immunology, microbiology, bioanalytics, microscopy, bioinformatics and others.
Clinical Research Unit (CRU)
The overarching goal of the CRU is to develop resources for advanced clinical research and to provide support for best practices in clinical research, to the faculty/scientists at AIIMS, New Delhi.
The CRU works as a specialized biomedical research unit that helps in designing and centrally coordinating clinical research. CRU assists in the development, application, and implementation of investigator-initiated studies in compliance with the best practices. The aim of CRU is to facilitate practice-changing research at AIIMS, addressing the critical priorities of the country in disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
The CRU routinely supports (but is not restricted to) the following types of studies: investigator-initiated clinical trials, cohort, case-control, cross-sectional studies as well as the studies evaluating diagnostic tests.
Centre for Medical Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CMIE)
The Centre for Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CMIE) was set up under BioNEST program at AIIMS, New Delhi with an aim to create an ecosystem of Incubation of Medical Innovations for Entrepreneurship and Inclusive Development of Indian Health Care. CMIE encourages innovation for specific health care needs leading to a novel solution with greater commercial success. CMIE nurtures entrepreneurship for global recognition, strengthens indigenous capability and contributes to the “Make in India” program.
The Patent Cell of AIIMS was established in 2000 to address issues related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Technology Transfer. The IPR and Technology Transfer Division is managed by the IPR Management Committee, chaired by the Dean (Research) as an ex-officio member.
The broad objective of the Patent Cell at AIIMS is to encourage innovation in Medical Sciences, Basic Sciences, and Medical Technology. The IPR unit aims to promote academic freedom, safeguard the intellectual property rights of inventors, and support a smooth mechanism for technology transfer. Additionally, it ensures a proportionate share of revenue among valid stakeholders.
