Infosys Chair in Cancer (Oncology)

This circular is being issued to apprise the faculty about the Infosys Chair and request them to nominate suitable persons for the Chair.

  • Preamble: Infosys Foundation has donated money to AIIMS to establish a chair in Cancer (Oncology).
  • Purpose of an endowed chair: The purpose of an endowed chair is to honour a distinguished faculty for his/her achievements and offer an opportunity to work at AIIMS. This chair to likely to benefit AIIMS faculty, students, and scientists as the distinguished visiting doctor/scientist is likely to bring with him/her unique expertise and experience in the concerned field i.e. Oncology.
  • Eligibility: For the Infosys chair in Cancer (Oncology) the following eligibility criteria would apply:
    • A doctor/scientist working in a reputed government national university/hospital or an international university/hospital in the concerned field with at least 10 years of professional experience after obtaining a postgraduate professional degree i.e. MD/PhD.
    • The person must have demonstrated excellence in the concerned field by way of the following: research publications in high impact journals (at least one paper in a journal with an impact factor of 10 or more), h-index of >15, and at least 25 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. Demonstrable commitment in the field e.g. having established a specialty/sub-specialty/centre will be given due consideration.
  • Procedure of nomination: Any faculty of the institute can nominate a suitable candidate for the endowed chair. The nomination form duly signed by the proposer should be sent to the Research Section along with the following:
    • Consent of the nominee
    • Consent of the host department in the institute
    • A 250-word write-up on the merits of the nominee by the proposer
    • A 250-word proposal about specific contributions expected of the nominee during the period of his/her stay at the institute
    • CV of the nominee with publications, achievements, awards and honours
  • Procedure of Selection: The nominations will be evaluated by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the AIIMS Endowment Fund through a fair and transparent evaluation process. The final selection will be done by the Executive Council.
  • Duration of Chairs: One to 3 months but may be extendable to a maximum of 6 months on a case-to-case basis if approved by the Executive Council.
  • Privileges associated with Chairs: The person appointed to the endowed chair will be treated as a visiting professor and entitled to write Infosys Chair of Oncology as the case may be. He/ She will be provided with economy/business class airfare as per rules (e.g. for a professor level person flying for >8 hours, business class fare will be granted), visa fee, per diem and accommodation. In addition, he/she will be given office space by the host department (even if on a shared basis) with internet connection, library access, and emergency health care.
  • Patient Care: A medical doctor awarded the chair will be entitled to be involved in patient care primarily for training/teaching a particular technique/procedure/treatment approach but not for routine patient care. International doctors with foreign degrees must be registered with the Medical Council of India before being permitted to be involved directly in any kind of patient care. The responsibility to get MCI registration will lie with the nominating person and/or the head of the host department. In case of a patient being treated by a foreign medical doctor, the patient’s informed written consent must be obtained beforehand.
  • Expectations from the Awardee: The awardee of the Chair is expected to contribute to the development of the specialty concerned. His/her involvement in research/patient care should help in capacity building and inspire younger faculty. The conduct of the awardee should be befitting to the prestige of endowed chair and he/she should act a brand ambassador for the institute.
  • Number of Awardees: It is likely that many experts will be selected for these prestigious chairs every year for a period ranging from 1 to 3 months. The limiting factor will be the total expenditure on such visits, which should not exceed Rs. 20 lacs/year for all such visits combined.
